Is it legal to download TV shows?

Due to the infancy of technology and its as of yet unclear boundaries within the law, a lot of gray areas exist when it comes to the legalities of downloading TV shows from the internet. This is further complicated by the fact that every country and state has its own laws, and the Internet has no concept of country or state.  However there are a few telling guidelines that a person can follow when he or she chooses to download TV shows into a computer.

First, while the capability to record TV shows and reproduce them on another media exist and is very easy to obtain, it does not necessarily mean that it’s legal to do so. With some countries, particularly the USA, it is illegal to reproduce any copyrighted material with express permission of the copyright owner, regardless of whether you’re going to sell the copies or just keep it for archival purposes. The lines are even clearer when it comes to downloading shows off the Internet, if the uploader resides in the US or in a country with similar laws, the act of uploading copyrighted material is already illegal, and that holds true for US residents downloading it.

However, it is not illegal to download the same content in other countries with different laws about copyrights and distribution, especially if the material in question only has copyrights in its country of origin. In this case, it MAY be perfectly legal to download TV show for your personal use.
